 Jill's Place:  A Haven for Women

 The Downtown's Women's Center in Los Angeles was founded in 1978 by one very pioneering woman, Jill Halverson, who was so deeply concerned by the struggles of mentally ill homeless women, that she took out her life savings to open up a day center for these women.  While the initial goals were simple, to provide a hot, well-balanced meal, the center soon began offering psychiatric help; and today, DWC provides a comprehensive list of services aimed at maintaining well-being and a sense of dignity.

One of the many diverse services DWC offers in its mission to improve the lives of LA's homeless women, is to provide permanent housing and a respite from life on the streets.  With one apartment complex already at capacity, and through some lucky-stars circumstances, DWC was able to acquire a second complex to convert into housing units.

A group of designers including, Nancy and I have come together to help transform the spaces in this building into a beautiful and functional, safe haven for the women.  Each team of designers has taken on one of the spaces, with Nancy and I volunteering for the resident manager's office. Our concept for the office is to create a warm, comfortable, feminine (it is a women's center after all!), but above all functional environment for the two managers who will be using the space.
